An early "Outdoor knife", a litte before its time and a real classic in the Windmühlen product line.

This rustic working knife emerged, probably in the 18th century in Belgium near the city of Lier where it gets its name.

Where it was made isn't clear but it was used for all kinds of cutting jobs in fields and forests. From bread to branches, scraping bark to make a fire or cleaning hooves it was the farmers constant companion.

The knife has a very distinctive shape. The handle is angled and made from untreated beechwood. The locking spring is mounted externally on the back of the knife and holds the blade in position using a small hole. To close the blade after use, simply lift this spring slightly and fold the blade back out of the indent. It is a simple but effective mechanism.

Of course, the blade made of non-stainless carbon steel, hardened to over 58 HRC (Rockwell). Ground using the "Solinger Dünnschliff" technique, blue glazed and very stable despite the thin blade. The wide form with the long, narrow grinding angles make the knife extremely sharp and helps it hold its edge.
